Friday Fun Facts

Learn some little-known and completely trivial facts about the Chicks. Then share one about yourself in the comments below!

Vickie Fee

All-time favorite TV show: The X-Files. I’m sooo geeked out there will be 10 new episodes! I know some purist X-philes are saying, “You can’t recapture the magic.” Blah, blah, blah. Don’t rain on my government conspiracy/paranormal parade, OK?

Favorite food: If you’ve ever talked to me for more than five minutes, you probably already know it’s BBQ. And I’m pretty picky about it, too! It has to be Memphis-style—smoky, moist, falling-off-the-bone tender, slathered in sticky, sweet sauce—pork ribs.

First book that made me cry: My own. Seriously, it was Charlotte’s Web. My 4th-grade teacher read a few pages to us each afternoon. When Charlotte died (pardon the spoiler), there was much weeping.

A classic novel I’ve never read: Billy Budd by Herman Melville. I did start reading it. But I figured if Melville didn’t finish it, why should I?

Who is my favorite among the Chicks on the Case? I adore them all equally. But if I were forced to choose, I’d pick… Eggatha!

Lisa Q. Mathews

First mystery ever read: The Bobbsey Twins of Lakeport.  I ended up reading a zillion of them. I loved The Greek Hat Mystery. Weirdly, I ended up editing this series for Simon & Schuster when I grew up.

Current fave TV show: Santa Clarita Diet.  I’m not usually into zombies, but Drew B. is irresistible. As an added bonus, her character is an ever-optimistic Realtor.

Favorite J. Garner: It’s a tie. Jennifer and James.

How many words I’ve written so far at Camp NaNoWriMo toward this month’s goal: I don’t want to brag or anything, so I’d rather not say.  All right, fine. Not very many.

Go-to karaoke song: I generally do my best to avoid public humiliation, but just cue up I Think I Love You. I may be even better than David Cassidy.

Marla Cooper

Last book I read: Folly, by Laurie R. King. It was the first book I’ve read from her, and it was terrific!

How many states I’ve visited: 28, although I’m planning to add 6 more next week during my Great American Road Trip!

Random coincidence of the week: I was offered a travel-writing assignment writing about Salem, Massachusetts, and I already had plans to go there next week!

Favorite ice cream flavor: Secret Breakfast at Humphrey Slocombe in San Francisco. It’s made with cornflakes and bourbon!

Go-to karaoke song: These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ by Nancy Sinatra. Or if I’m feeling ambitious, Me and My Bobby McGee — the Janis Joplin version.

Kellye Garrett

6Favorite Guilty Pleasure: 99 Cent Pizza in Manhattan. You can get two slices and a can of coke for $2.75. My coworkers are and I are obsessed with it.

Favorite Way to Waste Time: Target. I used to make up excuses to go but now I’m just like, “I’m bored. Let’s go spend money at Target.”

Favorite Current TV Show: Tiny House Hunters. I could never go on it because 1) I don’t know a local “friend” who is a realtor and 2.) I don’t have a friend with land to park it on.

Favorite Awards Show: The iHeartRadio Music Awards. I may be a bit biased though since I work there.

Most Recent Vacation: I’m trying to wrap up Detective by Day Book 2 so I took the week of the Fourth of July off work. I live in New Jersey but rented a hotel room in Manhattan for a few days. It surprisingly wasn’t super expensive and I was ridiculously productive.

Ellen Byron

All-time favorite song: Get Down Tonight, by KC and the Sunshine Band. I think it’s the best pop song ever written, and you will never get me to think otherwise.

Book I just finished reading: Tough Jews: Fathers, Sons, and Gangster Dreams. I’m researching a stand-alone inspired by my grandfather, who was low-level Jewish mob and disappeared in 1933.

Place where I’d love to own a second home: South Louisiana. (Big surprise there, huh?)

Favorite chocolate: Anything by See’s. But particularly their Coconut Special, Scotchmallow, and Butterscotch Squares.

Number of pounds I’ve lost since rejoining Weight Watchers in November for the millionth time: One. Maybe. (See above Fun Fact.)

Cynthia Kuhn

Last book I read: Party Girls Die in Pearls by Plum Sykes, an academic mystery set at Oxford. Loved it.

Favorite food: a giant salad, made by someone else.

Number of shoes owned that are not flip-flops or clogs: One (pair).

Favorite natural landmark: Niagara Falls, via Maid of the Mist: that moment when the boat pauses midway between the American and Canadian falls is simply indescribable–both overwhelming and moving.

Current favorite show: Orphan Black. Tatiana Maslany should win All The Awards, Everywhere.

    1. We share a favorite food, Judy – pizza! And I just learned that fellow Chick Kellye and I share an NYC guilty pleasure – 99 cent pizza. When we were in the city during spring break, we stayed at a hotel on 40th street behind what I call the rear end of Port Authority. There was a 99 cent place on the corner of 40th and 9th, and we lived there. Being the location, the crowd was heavy on druggies and hookers, but I lived nine blocks north for a while during the Eighties, so I’m used to that.

    2. Judy, I love short stories, especially mysteries! When I’m on deadline or in edits, it’s a read I can finish. I’ll have to look for Faceoff!

  1. Enjoyed the little known facts about the authors, except Ellen. Having a second home in southern Louisiana (meaning New Orleans) a no brainer, Ellen! Latest book I reread This Rough Magic by Mary Stewart. Heading to New Orleans myself in September

  2. Little known facts about me? Nothing! I’m an open book.
Stuff not known by the chicks?
Obsessed with the mob. And old Vegas show music.
Karaoke go to song? Mack the Knife. (See my obsessions).
My dream vacation? Eat my way through France. Every last region. No sight seeing, just eating wonderful food and drinking wine.
Biggest fear? Small talk at a party. But I can speak to a large audience. Go figure.
Job? People on Facebook and Twitter do not know I am a criminal auditor for the IRS. If you tell anyone, I know people (see my obsession). 😂

      1. Of course I did. I know how long it took the mayor to get that sucker approved. People didn’t want it, because they thought it would glam the mob, instead of showing them as the bad guys. That’s why it is they way it is, instead of the original plan.
Did you know the former mayor was the lawyer for Lansky and Rosenthal back in the day? Played himself in the movie ‘Casino’, which according to the ‘consultant’ on the set is about 80% true.

  3. Favorite all time TV show: Babylon 5 Yes, it’s science fiction, but it is incredible. It was conceived as a 5 year story, and while plans changed along the way, the creator did get his 5 seasons. And this was in the 90’s when no one (or very few) were doing story arcs of any kind of TV. The character growth and depth is wonderful.

If I had Netflix, I probably would have checked out Santa Clarita Diet by now. Not because I like zombies. I hate them. But since I live in Santa Clarita, I feel like I should watch it.

    1. I’ve been kinda wondering about Santa Clarita now, ha, since I’ve started watching the show. Agree with Cynthia it’s pretty gross in parts even tho it’s so funny. Very proud that I don’t have to cover my eyes, tho. I usually do.

      1. And Lisa, public humiliation is best shared with a friend! Lets’s team up for karaoke! And Marla can put on her white boots and walk on over and join us, OK?

      1. I keep thinking I need to check it out, but I’m several seasons behind at this point and not sure if it will happen or not.

    1. I’ve got all of Babylon 5 on DVD as well. It’s been a few years since I watched it all, and I really am feeling the need to rewatch. The problem is, every time I’ve watched, it’s been with friends, and I’m not sure who I’d watch it with right now. But it feels wrong to rewatch it by myself.

Seriously, I have made some of my best friends watching Babylon 5.

  4. Favorite movies: True Stories (directed by David Byrne, ot Talking Heads fame–it’s very strange and very wonderful) and Ishtar. Yes, I know what you all think about that movie, but if you’ve ever tried to write song lyrics it’s the funniest thing you’ll ever watch.

As for food, I’m with Hestia–eating my way through France would be a dream vacation. And yes, Ellen, Mary See invented the best chocolates ever!

    1. Yes to True Stories! What a quirky, delightful film. I bought the soundtrack on cassette tape back in the day and wore it out, ha. It’s been ages since I’ve seen Ishtar (that is Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman, right?) but maybe I’ll give it a rewatch on your rec. Thanks, Leslie!
