Well, right now I’m in writing jail, and because there’s a smidge more romance in my mystery-in-progress, my inspirational song of the moment is Perfect by Ed Sheeran. (I know, I know–I just included that same clip in my very recent Chicks post on figure skating, but I can’t help it!) Every once in a while, though, a girl’s gotta get up from the keyboard and move. To that end, my all-time fave is…Into the Groove by Madonna. (It will all come back to you, I promise–even you, Baby Chick Kellye!)

I’m a sucker for the type of song they call an anthem. You know, songs like Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing'” or Pink’s “Raise Your Glass.” My current favorite song is more Broadway than rock ‘n roll, but it’s such a great anthem I can’t resist singing or even dancing to it. (It’s a favorite of the Dance It Out teachers at my gym, too.) The song I’m talking about is This is Me from the movie, The Greatest Showman. The clip I linked to shows the first time the song was sung for the film backers. Afterwards, they told the phenomenal singer, Keala Settle, “Congratulations, you just booked your first major movie.”

Talk about inspirational! If my husband wasn’t sitting across from me as I write this, I’d burst into song right now.

Don’t expect to find any current hits on my song list. Ella Fitzgerald and Motown are my top stations on Pandora. Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield (released in 2004, so recent by my standards) is still number one on my Vickie-sit-your-butt-in-the-chair-and-write playlist when I’m staring at that blank page. “Today is where your book begins. The rest is still unwritten.” Oh, yeah. Story of my life. I’m also a huge Martina McBride fan, and I’d like to dedicate This One’s for the Girls to my lovely fellow Chicks. “You’re beautiful the way you are!”
Current pick for Here’s A Happy Little Boost is Cheap Thrills by Sia (sidenote: love the dancing in the video). For the You Do Too Have Enough Energy To Make It Through The Day: HandClap by Fitz and the Tantrums (also good vid dancing). And then there’s the Need A Bit of Fun song: Best Friend by Sofi Tukker.
If I have a very long drive, I’ll pop in the Chicago soundtrack and start belting it out. (I will never get tired of that one! Every song is great, and it’s an instant mood-lifter.)

Eeek! I am so old. My genre is 40s to 60s. I love Old Blue Eyes and The King the most. Something about Vegas style signing. Both make my knees weak. My current fave is Mack the Knife. Fits with the pulp fiction shorts I’m writing next month for Camp NaNo. Hope I keeps me in the mood to write 5 shorts.

I love all those too, Hestia. The play I wrote that put me on the map is called GRACELAND, about two Elvis fans competing to be the first person to step inside Graceland the first day it’s opened to the public. And “Beyond the Sea” by Bobby Darin is one of my all-time faves.

Usually my favorite is something from Bruce Springsteen, but now I am on a Hamilton kick so I listen to the cast album everyday and belt out those songs with the cast.

After the election, when I couldn’t bear to listen to the news, ALL I listened to was the Hamilton soundtrack! I was “Helpless.” 😉 My favorite Springsteen song is a more obscure one: “Tunnel of Love.” I knew he’d end up with Patty Scialfa. I used to see pix of them on tour and go, “Why did he marry that model? He and this chick in his band really seem to have a bond.”

The one that always gets me dancing and singing is “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon. My son plays it for me in the car. 🙂

I’m loving The Greatest Showman soundtrack as well. I’m shocked that “This is Me” didn’t win the Oscar last weekend. I think I’m a little more drawn to “Rewrite the Stars,” but it’s a close call. Can’t wait until the movie hits blu-ray!

That was fun, to click all the links of the songs in the post! Now I’m feeling sort of musically jaunty.
And the songs in the comments are all great choices! I thought the performances of all the songs in the Oscars were powerful, but yeah, “This is Me” pushes some invisible Now You Must Get Teary button, every time.

“Burning Down the House” by Talking Heads is the one song that will ALWAYS get me up to dance. But the ones that become earworms tend more towards the Great American Songbook or the Beatles.

I wrote about my current random faves in the post, but all-time faves are something completely different, and highly 80s-centric (Duran Duran, Talking Heads, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, New Order, etc.), though there are earlier and later ones that I adore beyond belief too. Not that you asked. Now I’m just rambling.

I love anything Motown…my songs tend to be on the older side (60s and early 70s). Ellen Byron, I also love the anthems!! Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seeger always makes me want to dance. The soundtrack from Chicago and from Mama Mia are faves also.
