Guest Chick: Julie Mulhern

Please welcome Julie Mulhern, USA Today bestselling author of The Country Club Murders and the Poppy Fields Adventures. Her latest mystery, BACKSTABBERS, is now available. Today, she’s brought copies of the first book in the Poppy Fields series for five lucky commenters!

I am thrilled to be hanging out with the Chicks – but being here isn’t without stress. Some of the funniest women I know are Chicks. So, no pressure.

Funny is subjective.

My teenagers think I am the unfunniest person to ever grace the planet. Ever.

Ever.

There is a one-star review of one my books (yes, I read them—call me a masochist) that says, “I was promised laugh-out-loud funny. I only chuckled.” Clearly this reviewer agrees with my progeny.

My all-time favorite review? It’s from a woman who noted everyone in the chemotherapy infusion room wanted to know what she was reading because she was laughing so hard.

We need laughter. People who can laugh at life’s minor pitfalls are happier (and no, I’m not stating the obvious—someone with too much money funded a study). People who laugh live longer—laughter decreases the secretion of epinephrine and cortisol in the body. Laughter reduces stress, promotes relaxation, and improves circulation.

Laughing with other people fosters emotional connections. Laughing (not over my books) with my daughters is one of the joys of motherhood.

What makes me laugh? Frasier re-runs, a website called Damn You Auto-Correct, a handful of comedians, the original Match Game (Charles Nelson Riley and Brett Sommers were hysterical), and the turkey-drop WKRP episode (I swear, as God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly).

How about you? What tickles your funny bone? I have five e-copies of Fields’ Guide to Abduction to give away—comment to enter.

Julie Mulhern is the USA Today bestselling author of The Country Club Murders and the Poppy Fields Adventures.

She is a Kansas City native who grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie. She spends her spare time whipping up gourmet meals for her family, working out at the gym and finding new ways to keep her house spotlessly clean–and she’s got an active imagination. Truth is–she’s an expert at calling for take-out, she grumbles about walking the dog and the dust bunnies under the bed have grown into dust lions.

Action, adventure, mystery, and humor are the things Julie loves when she’s reading. She loves them even more when she’s writing!

  1. I love your books and your humor, Julie! Maybe I laugh easily, because I thought that one-star review was hilarious. Fields’ Guide to Abduction is on my ereader, and if it’s anything like your Ellison books I’m sure I will be doing more than chuckling.

  2. Julie, you are hilarious!! And the comment from the reader who was being entertained during chemotherapy is touching. So glad you could stop by and congrats on the new release!

  3. I really enjoy Mulhern’s books. I have laughed out loud a few times. I laugh out loud most when people (non-fiction) tell about their neurosis and odd behaviors and fictional drug fueled rampages. Especially Serge and Coleman.

  4. Julie your books are pure laughter, no matter what the kids think! I try to find the laughter in whatever comes my way. I especially enjoy books that make me laugh out loud.

  6. What makes me laugh? I love Lucy reruns, Laura Levine’s books, The Good Place. I love laughing as well.

I do find I don’t laugh at often at books as others seem to. I read many humorous mysteries that make me smile and chuckle while others are laughing out loud. But I still enjoy them.

(And since I don’t have this book, I’d love to win.)

  7. I have really enjoyed the Country Club series in audio–truly, very very funny! And what’s not to love about an uptight police officer named Anarchy? Congratulations on the new series!

  8. I believe that it is difficult for someone to write something that makes a person laugh. But to write something that makes a person laugh until they cry and their belly hurts is indeed a very rare gift! Julie, you have a very rare gift!!!

  9. I have to say when I watch the opening comedy routine on Saturday Night Live I laugh pretty hard. I don’t know your books but they sound like a lot of fun and you are right that the Chicks are an amazing group of ladies.

  10. Ha! Well you made me laugh with this post: “I was promised laugh-out-loud funny. I only chuckled.” I think you should definitely make lemonade out of lemons and use that line in a future book. And I agree that Frasier is awesome–the best sit-com ever, in my book.

Thanks so much for visiting the Chicks today, Julie!

  11. Thanks for brightening our day, Julie! And I think you and your books are hilarious. (Not to mention those 70s throwback pix on FB.). I haven’t seen that turkey episode (this year for sure!), but I figured they couldn’t fly until a whole rafter of wild ones took off right in my face in our backyard (I was trying to get a close-up pic). Scared me witless. They hang out in the trees like vultures. (My daughter is famous in our family for confusing the two in the road.)

  12. Julie! The first time I met you we were on a panel about humorous mysteries, so you cannot convince me that you’re not funny! Never! No matter how hard you try! Thanks for stopping by today; what a great post!(And sorry for all the exclamation points; I’m just excited!) xoxo

  15. When I watch tv programs like Carol Brunett(yes I’m showing my age) you can’t help cracking up. It’s good to have a good laugh until you cry. I haven’t read any of your books yet but would love to start.
