Guest Chicks: Melissa Bourbon and Wendy Watson

We have something super fresh and seasonal for you today: please welcome Melissa Bourbon and Wendy Watson, authors of several terrific series on their own who are now writing a series together: the Book Magic Mysteries! Nothing like a little magic just in time for Halloween…

Hello readers!

We are so excited to be with you on Chicks on the Case today.

I’m Melissa Bourbon, and I’m also known as Winnie Archer.

And I’m Wendy Lyn Watson, also known as Annie Knox.

We used to live one street away from each other. Good times. We walked (sporadically) together, and when we did, we’d, of course, talk books. Sometimes they’d be books we’ve read or were reading, and often our conversations centered around what we were writing at the time.

Wendy had this brilliant concept about a bibliomancer who uses books to help her solve mysteries. The books provide messages. Melissa was quite jealous of said brilliant idea.

A few years passed, Melissa moved, and our walks stopped. But we never forgot the biblio-mancer idea. Then, earlier this year (possibly the one good thing to come out of 2020), we were talking, the bibliomancer books came up, and we decided, on the spot, to do them together.

It was a total meant-to-be moment.

So, the Book Magic Mysteries are a collaboration. What that means is that Wendy is writing some of the books, and Melissa is writing some of the books. Our heroines (Pippin and Cora) are cousins who live on opposite coasts (North Carolina and Oregon, respectively). They have the family gift of bibliomancy. All that is explained throughout the course of the series.

Our books will alternate. Book 1, Murder in Devil’s Cove, came out a few weeks ago. Book 2, Death at Cape Misery, by Wendy, will release on December 31. From there, we’ll continue to take turns. While we each have our own mysteries to solve in our own books, there is also a bigger series mystery that will resolve with book 7—which we will be writing collaboratively.

In between, there will be novellas, or what we like to call mini mysteries. The Secret on Rum Runner’s Lane is the first mini mystery and begins Cassie’s story. It releases November 10th.

Developing the Lane family lore, deciding what bits of information will be revealed in each of our books throughout the series, and getting to craft such an interesting plot has been a new and amazing experience.

We hope you’re as intrigued as we are and that you’ll jump into the Book Magic Mysteries with both feet.

Happy reading!

Melissa and Wendy

  1. I love the idea for your new series! I will be sure to add those to my list of must reads. And thank you to ALL the “chicks” who help me escape 2020, even if it is just for a couple of hours every day.

  2. Thank you for sharing the story of how your series came to be. I love it! And the bibliomancer is so unique. I’m not sure I could write a series with another person. They would probably be horrified by how disorganized my writing process is.

    1. LOL We’re writing our own novels, so the collaboration is very manageable since we’re only accountable to the larger series arc and our timeline!

  3. I just finished up another collaborative series that also featured cousins – the Pampered Pets Mysteries by Sparkle Abbey. It was a lot of fun.

This sounds intriguing for sure. Best of luck with it.

    1. Thank you, Jennifer! It’s been amazing to see how fast these stories and the series have come together. They almost write themselves 🙂

    1. We plotted the overarching series plot together, but our individual books are our own. Plotting the series together has been so much fun. We’re always bouncing ideas off each other.
