Almost The Holidays…Or Maybe They Already Started!

Whee! It’s that time of year again, when no one seems to agree on when holiday decorations should begin to appear around town.

Stores have started putting out displays earlier and earlier, and inquiring minds want to know:

Does the sight of holiday decorations going up right after Halloween make you want to scream?

Or does it make you want to run for your favorite reindeer sweater and get things started?

Please tell us more, in the comments, about when you like your holiday season to begin and what you do to kick things off!

In any case, soon I will be pulling out the old lights and untangling them…because that could take awhile. 😉

  2. I hate it that as soon as Halloween is over, the stores start selling Christmas decorations and some people decorate their homes and set up the Christmas tree.
    The first week of November is WAAAAY too early for me to be seeing Santas and hearing Christmas carols!
    Early December is fine.

      1. Well, Canadian Thanksgiving is way before Halloween (this year it was on October 11), so I agree with many other commenters that Christmas decorations after the US Thanksgiving is ok.

  3. I love the sight of Christmas going up after Halloween, however, my poor hubby does not, so, I hold myself back for him. I wait until the day after Thanksgiving decorate for Christmas. He would definitely wait until sometime in December to decorate.🎄

      Think that’s great timing.

      My husband also wants to wait until December while meanwhile, as soon as Thanksgiving meal is over, I’m like: now? now? now?

  4. Like Dru, I start the Christmas holiday decorating after Thanksgiving. Which is technically November, but I voted December.

    Local radio stations are already playing Christmas music, which The Hubby and I both think is too early. And I nixed a Christmas movie on Netflix last night (with Kelsey Grammer) because I said, “If it’s too early for Christmas music, it’s too early for Christmas movies.”

    1. Ooh, I haven’t heard a Christmas song on the radio yet. Though I think it’s been on a news channel for awhile in the car so it’s probably time to make the seasonal switch. 😉

      And YES agree about the too early. Though I confess I watched one of the Christmas in July movies on Hallmark this summer…unintentionally. It was on in the background but then I started watching it and oh well that happened.

  5. I celebrate Christmas and LOVE the lights, the music and all. But I love Thanksgiving and I like to wait to decorate until the turkey is gone. Actually, to tell you all the truth, I listen to the Carols of Christmas all year long. I think what makes people so angry about Christmas music and decorations in the stores is the push to make everyone buy buy BUY. Once I escaped from that trap, and just buy small gifts for everyone, with no pressure, I now enjoy the meaning of the season much more. I try to keep that spirit all year.

  6. I don’t do any decorating at my home until December, but for many years I was advertising and sales promotion manager for a large New England department store. In order to get all of the store decorations, special displays etc. in place it was necessary to get it started in October. Same with Christmas merchandise. It had to be ordered early, in store early, on display early to satisfy customer demand. There are probably even tighter schedules now.

  7. At my house, we don’t decorate for Christmas until December. Then, we keep the decorations up until after the new year. To each, their own, whatever makes folks happy!

  8. I voted for November, but I meant any time after Thanksgiving. When my kids were young they were in year-round school which meant their long break was Thanksgiving until January 6 or whenever everyone goes back to school. That was glorious. We could take our time doing everything and nobody was ever sick for Christmas!

    1. Totally understand! One of my colleges was on the quarter system and we had from Thanksgiving until after New Year’s off…it was perfect.

      On the semester system, we take a break for Thanksgiving, go back for a final week of class, then finals week, then have to grade right up until around the 20th. Argh!

  9. I voted for December even though I’m okay with post-Thanksgiving. Having decorations and music happening right after Halloween seems way too early. Then again, I’m a big procrastinator–at least when it comes to decorating!

  10. You need to be specific about what kind of lights you are putting up. Because I had some orange lights up for Halloween.

    I moved some furniture over the weekend to get ready for my Christmas trees, but I haven’t moved them from my garage yet. My Christmas lights aren’t up either. Usually, I try to have trees up and lights up inside and out before I leave for Thanksgiving, but since I just signed up to do a mud run on Saturday, I’m not sure if it will happen or not.

    And I still need to take down the rest of the Halloween decorations. I feel like I should do that before I do any more toward Christmas.

  11. I’m never early getting ANYTHING done. We usually put some Christmas decorations up in early December and keep adding until Christmas. However, we have been known to leave the tree up until Easter!
    Here in the north country of the U.P., a lot of folks tend to put their outdoor lights up early, even in October, to beat the first big snowfall.

    1. Ha! Then it becomes an Easter Tree! All you have to do is add rabbit ornaments and eggs…

      Decorating before a big snowfall makes good sense from a safety standpoint, gotta say. 🙂

    2. Here in NH, too!!! Paddy’s Day is usually my limit on lights, but the little white fairy lights in the garlands stayed up pemanently during the pandemic–and they’re still there now. Head start on the season! They are cheerful.

  12. Anytime after Thanksgiving seems perfectly reasonable to me. But truly, if folks take joy from putting up festive decorations at ANY time of year, I don’t really have a problem with that. (And fairy lights can very properly stay up year round!)

  13. We always put outdoor decorations up in December but I prefer they go up right after Thanksgiving, which is what we’ll do this year. The tree goes up mid-December. It’s artificial, so it’s okay if it’s up for a while. But what’s MOST important is stuffing coming down on the 2nd. Nothing sadder than holiday decorations AFTER the holiday!

    2. In Colorado it’s traditional to leave outdoor decorations up until after the National Western Stock Show, a livestock show/sale, rodeo, and festival that’s been going on since 1906. Usually until the 3rd week of January or so.

  14. I’m also a fan of Anytime After Thanksgiving for holiday decor, but I confess, I do start listening to Christmas songs as soon as the radio starts playing them. And I watched The Holiday last weekend, so I guess I’m starting the festivities early!
