A perfect day for… whatever

You’re probably aware today is Labor Day —especially if you have the day off from work!

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 in recognition of American Labor and in conjunction with the rise of trade unions.

Some lesser known “national holidays” this month include:

Yesterday (Sept. 4) was National Pet Rock Day. Sorry I missed that one. I actually had a pet rock back in the 1970s. Yesterday was also Eat an Extra Dessert Day. (Really sorry I missed that one!)

In addition to Labor Day, today (Sept. 5) is also National Be Late for Something Day. I celebrate this one on any given day, but I intend to be a rebel and be on time for something today.

Know I’m preaching to the choir here, but Sept. 6 is National Read A Book Day! (Image by Pixabay)

Sept. 6 is National Read a Book Day. I know all the regular Chicks on the Case blog readers already read every day. But for anyone who has been neglecting their TBR (To Be Read) pile, I would encourage you to seize the day – and the book— today!

Sept. 7 is National Beer Lover’s Day (I would’ve assumed this was in October during Oktoberfest.)

And September 8 is National Ampersand Day. Is there a National Oxford Comma Day? I’d be on board for that. We could make one up and declare it, couldn’t we? I think we have as much authority as whoever posts these “National Days” of observance on the Internet. By the way Sept. 8 is also National Star Trek Day for those who celebrate.

Sept. 9 is National Stand Up to Cancer Day. A huge hug and big shout out to those of you who are fighting or have fought this battle. This is also National Box Wine Day, so Cheers!

Other important “days” to note this month include: World Suicide Prevention Day (Sept. 10), International Day of Peace and World Alzheimer’s Day (both Sept. 21),  and National Women’s Health and Fitness Day.

National Barber Day is Sept. 16. Never cut your own bangs. I certainly won’t do that. Again. (Image by Pixabay)

Some perhaps less important, but still worth considering days this month include: National Silent Movie Day (Sept. 29),  National Pancake Day (Sept. 26), Hobbit Day (Sept.22), National Barber Day (Sept. 16)*Never cut your own bangs; Talk like a Pirate Day (Sept. 19), Batman Day (Sept 17), and International Chocolate Day (Sept. 13)*noted

National Coffee Day (Sept. 29) – I celebrate this one every day. And (note to self) Batman Day is also my wedding anniversary. (Note to anyone else in my household who might be reading this: I’m thinking Lagniappe’s Cajun Creole Eatery for dinner that day!)

Happy Labor Day to everyone, especially those who have to work today!

Any plans for Labor Day? If you were creating a calendar, which new, unusual, or specific-to-you holidays would you include? Share in the comments.

  1. On Labor Day, I will be laboring over the current book WIP, which I’m convinced is trying to kill me. I typed The End yesterday but quickly realized nonononono. That ending won’t work. A common thing throughout this draft. So I’ll try again today. Happy Labor Day, Chicks!

    1. Aw, Annette, may the writing muses be with you! Sometimes nailing the landing, or the ending, is the trickiest part! Make time for ice cream or some sort of treat for yourself today!

  2. At this stage in life, every day is a holiday! Today’s activities include tuning up my how-to graphics on character development (theirs, not mine—although my wife suggested I’m due for a few updates, too).

  3. Seeing as I am retired, everyday is Labor Day for me. Today would be a good day to stay in and get an early start on “Read a Book Day”. It is pouring right now. Yes, I have ignored my TBR book pile, because every time I finish a book another one pops up either online or from a friend that screams “READ ME NOW!” My next book will be from that pile.
Later on I am taking a prayer shawl that I made to a friend who has been battling a lot of health issues.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day!

  4. Vickie, your post brought to mind this quote from A Thousand Clowns, a stage play and one of the best movies ever. The speaker is the protagonist, the inimitable Murray Burns (no relation!).

“I gotta know what day it is! I gotta know what’s the name of the game, and what the rules are, without anyone else telling me. You gotta own your own days, and name ’em. Each one of ’em. Every one of ’em! Or else the years go right by, and none of them belong to you.”

  5. Sign me up for Oxford Comma Day, Vickie!

Today, while Robin plays in a bridge tournament in San Jose, I’ll be lazing around the house drinking coffee (yes, every day is Coffee Day!), reading, and perhaps working in the garden,

  6. Well, I am here at my daughter’s house awaiting the arrival of a special little someone. It has to be today, right? Because…Labor Day! (Everyone has been texting my poor daughter that message, lol. Think she may be done with that “joke.”)

  7. I’m actually working today. Was supposed to have the day off, but I will have put in 20 hours of overtime by the end of today. I’m treating today like a regular work day.

      1. Overtime? I’m salaried. I don’t get any of that overtime pay nonsense. I do this because I love my job. (I hope you can sense the sarcasm.)

    1. If most people in the office are off for the holiday, hopefully it will at least make for a quiet, less stressful day for you, Mark!

  8. I’m looking forward to September 15. I read somewhere that’s National Cozy Mystery Day!

Today, I’m running errands and prepping for four of Eliza’s friends showing up tomorrow for a few days’ visit. It’s hot as Hades, though, so I may sneak in a nap.

  9. These red letter days are amaaaaaaaaazing, Vickie!

I worked today, but in my heart celebrated National Procrastination Day a day early to see if it would create some kind of rift in the fabric of the universe. So far, nothing, but maybe…later? Speaking of later, happy anniversary in advance!

  10. Thanks, Kathy! Procrastination is kind of built into my schedule at this point! Sorry you had to work today, but go ahead and pencil in box wine day on your calendar!!

  11. Guess I’m doing the Be Late for Something right now! Today was spent hanging out with family, so that’s why I’m chiming in late. Hope everyone had a great day! (*Also, I tried cutting my hair once…and the hairdresser could tell, and not in a good way!)

  12. Hi, Jen — so glad you got to have family time today!
The hairdresser always knows! I always end up regretting it when I get out the scissors thinking, “I could trim just a tiny bit off the sides!” Lol
