Chicks Celebration: Launch of Writing the Cozy Mystery anthology

Welcome to “Chicks Celebration,” our fun new Chicks on the Case feature! Join us as we Chicks share what we’re currently celebrating (book release, new idea, recent read)…

1. Which Chick is celebrating? Jen

2. The reason for the celebration? The launch of the anthology, Writing the Cozy Mystery: Authors’ Perspectives on Their Craft. It released on August 5th.

3. What have you been doing to celebrate? A bunch of the authors were able to meet up at the most recent Malice Domestic to toast and celebrate together! Contributors, in order of appearance in the anthology, are: Sherry Harris, Vicki Delany, Justin M. Kiska, Diane Vallere, Kait Carson, Tina deBellegarde, Mary Anna Evans, J.A. Hennrikus, Andrea J. Johnson, Peggy Ehrhart, Edith Maxwell, Sybil Johnson, Maya Corrigan, Leslie Budewitz, Jennifer J. Chow, Rabbi Ilene Schneider, Marni Graff, M.E. Hilliard, Amanda Flower, Kathleen Marple Kalb (Nikki Knight), J.C. Kenney, Carol E. Ayer, and Winnie Frolik–and our editor, Phyllis M. Betz.

 4. How are you feeling right now? Unreal. Even though I have a signed copy from the editor in my hot little hands, it still hasn’t sank in. Maybe after I update my bio with the new publishing credit, it’ll feel more real.

5. Any neat stories to share? Wonderfully, Sisters in Crime is generously giving its member a discount code for 20% off if you order the anthology through the publisher’s site. SinC Members: Check your latest SinC News email for that code!

  1. this is so exciting. I picked it up as soon as it was announced. I am hoping to check out some of the essays this weekend.

    my question is this.

What is the one piece of writing advice you received that you felt changed you and your authoristic mind?

is that the advice you’d give a fledgling writer, or what golden nugget would you offer?

    thank you.

    1. Thank you, and great questions, Hestia!

I think something that changed me was looking at success differently–using comparisons only of myself from several years back to determine if I’m moving forward.

For the fledgling writer, I would say try to write in multiple ways to get your juices flowing: in silence, with noise, using a specific time of day, writing longhand, speech-to-text, etc.

      1. Thank for asking, Hestia! The best advice I ever received was to write what makes me happy, to not go chasing trends. Readers can tell when are hearts are and aren’t into a story.

As for what advice I can share? Don’t get into this for the money. Do it because it makes you happy. If you’re not having fun, why bother? Also, try to surround yourself with allies. We’re all in this writing thing together, and theore we can all do to help each other, the better.

  2. I just finished reading Writing the Cozy Mystery, hot off the press, and found every one of the essays both informative and inspiring. Definitely a must for any cozy writer’s book shelf. Congrats, Jen and Fellow Cozyists!
