Let’s Talk about Cake

Star-Crossed Egg Tarts came out this past Tuesday! This is book two in the Magical Fortune Cookie series. My main character, Felicity Jin, is off to cater a wedding, bringing the dessert. It’s too bad that a dead body gets found under the cake table.

But I’m not here today to talk about what’s under a cake table, but rather what’s on top of it. In Star-Crossed Egg Tarts, Felicity makes her cake out of tiers of egg tarts. In real life, my own wedding cake involved separate slices of different flavors: ube, mango, or vanilla. It was a choose-your-own-culinary-adventure. You know, because people have food preferences a la When Harry Met Sally (think: coconut cake with chocolate sauce on the side). P.S. We also served bubble tea at our reception, but they ran out before we could drink any!

Our display cake, and then we served up slices with different flavors to attendees

The weddings I’ve attended in the past have all featured a variety of cakes, everything from fancy French ones to fluffy strawberry cake. Though one of my relatives eschewed cake entirely and went with Krispy Kreme donuts.

While researching wedding cake choices online, I did come across some unique choices. These include a pancake stack, s’mores cake, and a gelato cart.

What was the best wedding cake you’ve eaten? Or, if you’re not a cake person, what would you substitute for cake?

  1. The best wedding cake I’ve ever eaten is probably the one from my own wedding, Jen. Admittedly, I have lots of great memories from that day, so my judgment may be a little biased.

my younger kiddo is getting married I the fall and he and his bride to be are going to have cupcakes. That should be fun! 🧁

  2. Jen, you’re such a beautiful bride! And I love your selection of flavors. I loved our cake. It was a white cake with a layer of chocolate and a layer of strawberry filling. All in one cake. It’s the only wedding cake I remember!

  3. One wedding I attended did cupcakes instead of traditional cake. Don’t think I’ve seen anything else creative. Now I’m wondering about a wedding pie.

  4. Congratulations on your new release, Jennifer! The best wedding cakes I’ve ever tasted were from a home baker in Cody, Wyoming. Her cakes were just your typical flavors but whatever she did, they were the best! My favorite was her vanilla cake with an almost Boston cream filling. So good!

  5. Robin and I went for the traditional yellow cake with (white) vanilla butter-cream icing, which is my favorite for cake. But to tell you the truth, I have no memory of eating any that night. But we did freeze the top layer and have it on our first anniversary, and it was delicious!

As for creative wedding food ideas, this isn’t cake related, but for my nephew’s “rehearsal dinner” (in quotes because there was no rehearsal), he and his bride hired an In-N-Out Burger food truck, and for dessert they had a paleta (i.e., Mexican ice cream/popsicle) cart. Super fun–and delicious!

    1. Traditional and tasty, Leslie! And I’ve always wondered about saving a slice and whether it’d still taste okay…

An In-N-Out truck paired with a paleta cart–what a treat! Recently, my friend celebrated their son’s first birthday, and they had a churro cart!

  6. You were such a beautiful bride, Jen–and that’s a gorgeous display cake! We did a main cake and a groom’s cake (basically was so people who didn’t like chocolate could still enjoy their cake). We also served strawberries: plain, or with white icing or chocolate or whipped cream as well. And I think chocolate sauce on the side. I did attend a New England wedding with a choice of Whoopie Pies: Chocolate or Spice. I think I had both.

  7. Jennifer, I love your photos of your wedding and the fantastic cake which I would have loved to eat. We did not have a wedding or a cake that was traditional. After 6 years dating since HS, 13 years of being engaged, we finally went to the Tarrant County Courthouse in Texas and got married. That was 42 years ago. But if we had had a traditional wedding like my sister, I would have had a Red Velvet Cake with Buttercream frosting. Or maybe not as there are so many other great cakes. I love a Hummingbird Cake, my Rum Cake, Coca Cola Cake, Italian Cream Cake, Carrot Cake, and so many others as I love good cakes. I just bought your book and can’t wait to read it. Thanks for sharing. Keep on writing as your books are some of my favorites and I have bought and read them all.

  8. Belated congratulations for Star-Crossed Egg Tarts, Jen, and thanks for sharing your wedding cake description and photos. I love it all!

My favorite wedding “cake” was a tower of doughnuts in honor of my friend’s new husband who, along with many other guests, was a police officer. It was fun and delicious!
