Goodbye and Hello: Show Edition

For many of us, it has been a difficult week, as we bid goodbye to SuccessionBarry, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel all at once. Now with Ted Lasso ending in a few days, it is almost more than one can bear.

*Pause for deep breaths.*

Thank goodness we have some new things coming our way that may be intriguing. Because of our focus here on the blog, I’ll keep the list below to those with crimes/mysteries involved in one way or another. (Please note: some of the trailers do have language that couldn’t appear in a cozy mystery…probably don’t have to announce that since we’ve all watched cable tv before but just wanted to mention.)

  • Shining Vale (season 2) with Courteney Cox, Greg Kinnear, Mira Sorvino, and Gus Birney: A writer moves with her family into a haunted house and mayhem follows. For fans of comedy and horror rolled into one. [trailer]
  • The Afterparty (season 2) with Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, and Zoë Chao: The first season was centered on a high school reunion and all of its accompanying complexities, and of course a party featuring a murder where every guest could be the killer. [trailer]
  • Only Murders in the Building (season 3) with Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short: So ready for another season with our delightful trio of amateur sleuths/podcasters solving mysteries in The Arconia, where they all live. And this year, Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep have joined the cast! [trailer]
  • Nancy Drew (season 4) with Kennedy McMann, Alex Saxon, Tunji Kasim, Leah Lewis, and Maddison Jaizani: This adaptation of the Nancy Drew books, aimed at the CW’s audience, ups the supernatural quotient quite a bit and makes use of multiple genres, much like Riverdale.  [trailer]
  • True Detective (season 4): In case you haven’t seen it, this show has new lead actors solving a different case each season. This time around, the focus is on Jodie Foster and Kali Reis tracking down clues in Alaska during the long night. [trailer]

What forthcoming shows are you looking forward to?

(Of course please support the writers’ strike…you can even donate if interested!)

  1. Great idea for a post! I’ve added a bunch to my list of viewing pleasures. I’ll add one I just finished and stayed up too late to watch—the Silence of Water in Italian with subtitles on PBS Masterpiece. Enjoy.

  2. Oh my gosh, Cynthia, how FUN!! I will be referring back to this post many times this summer. A lot of these shows I hadn’t even heard of yet. I was especially amused by the Nancy Drew trailer. I think “ups the supernatural quotient quite a bit” may be an understatement, ha. The last Nancy Drew show was pretty dark, but this one makes Nancy seem more relatable and fun. But I will definitely need someone to watch with me to warn me of the jump scares–I’ll provide the popcorn (and the licorice all for you, Kathy!).

    1. You’re right…very much of an understatement…it’s super supernatural. 🙂

Cannot wait to hear what you, our resident Nancy Drew expert, think about it! It definitely has humor along with the darkness.

  3. Definitely looking forward to watching Ted Lasso, though I’ll wait till it’s completely dropped before forking out the dough to stream it. And you know Meryl Streep is gonna rock it in Only Murders in the Building! I hope she ends up being the murderer!

    1. Yay! You only have to wait until Wednesday! Hope you enjoy Ted…it’s incredibly heartwarming and funny. Wish I could watch it again for the first time.

And so agree about Meryl! She is wonderful in everything.

  4. Oh, this is so handy! As to shows I’m looking forward to, Jer and I want to catch the third season of THE OTHER TWO on HBO Max, which is really funny. We also have to watch WHITE HOUSE PLUMBERS. Saw ep 1 and really enjoyed it. And I just read about two news shows that look good: HIGH DESERT, a comedy with Patricia Arquette, who’s wonderful and very nice (I met her once!); and SPY/MASTER.

  5. Weird viewer that I am, I haven’t watched any of the ending shows, and I’m not planning to watch any of the upcoming shows.

The Flash did end last week for me. Finally. It devolved into a mess the last couple of years.

As for upcoming, I don’t know that I have that much upcoming I’m really looking forward to on TV thanks to the writers strike. American Ninja Warrior is back, but that’s not scripted. Maybe I’ll finally get to dive into some of the TV on DVD sets I’ve been wanting to revisit.

  6. Thanks for the update, Cyn! I didn’t know the new season of Only Murders in the Building was premiering this week! Best. News. Ever.

        1. Ah, thanks, C! That’s still earlier than I had expected! I thought we’d have to wait til September or October.

  7. Thanks for these suggestions, Cynthia. It’s hard for me to find a series I like . . . and finding one to watch with my husband is nearly impossible. Though it’s not new, I really, really enjoyed The Magpie Murders. It’s very literary-focused (and based on the book by Anthony Horowitz). Plus, the main character’s wardrobe and house were wonderful!
