Sunrise, sunset

Harry Potter turned 33 last week. (Not the one who went to school at Hogwarts, but the one (aka Daniel Radcliffe, who was born in London and who, apropos of nothing, is still only 5 ft. 5 inches tall.

This makes me feel a bit old, since Harry is eternally 8 years old to me. I had a birthday in May that was a millstone, um… I mean milestone of sorts as well. Not that we shall speak of it.

In July, my family will gather in Tennessee to celebrate a happy milestone event that is truly hard for me to wrap my head around. My oldest niece, Madeline, is getting MARRIED! I swear she was a babe in arms just a few weeks ago. (She’s pictured above as a toddler in charge of the remote control.)

I am looking forward to the wedding, although I’m sure I’ll be clutching a tissue and daubing my eyes. I have ordered four dresses online for the wedding, although I’ll only wear one on the day. Two have been delivered. My favorite (as far as the photo) has yet to arrive. The other two fit, so I’ll have something to wear, regardless. However, one of them is a bit more casual than I’d prefer, and the other has a couple of minor issues.

Madeline is a tall, slender beauty and I know she’ll be a vision on her special day. Her fiancé, David, is very handsome and they are a super cute couple. They just graduated from college. Madeline is a nurse and David will be going on to law school. Eventually, I assume they’ll have gorgeous progeny…. *Sniff* *Sniff* Excuse me. I need to grab a tissue.

Is there something that makes you feel old(er)? Has seeing an old friend or recent picture of a favorite celebrity startled you with the reality of time passing? Have children in your family aged with mysterious rapidity? Share in comments.

  1. I remember the birth of my son like it was yesterday. I mean like every detail. He will be 45 in November. At his wedding, the mother and son dance was “Forever Young” by Rod Stewart. I cry every time I hear the song now. But they have given me 3 beautiful, silly granddaughters and the oldest is named Madelynn and I hope I get to dance at her wedding when she is ready to tie the knot.

    1. Queen, Madelynn will be a beautiful bride. She’ll bring much joy and many tears before then — kindergarten graduation, prom, graduation, etc.!

  2. How wonderful, Vickie! Congrats and best wishes to all. (I think I remember some etiquette rule where you’re never supposed to congratulate a bride, but say “best wishes” instead–and I’m all about the etiquette, as we know, lol.) Summer family events are always special–we’ll “see” you before July, but hope you all have a lovely time. No weddings for our family in the near future that I know of. Bummer.

    1. David’s parents and my brother and his wife were college chums and are still good friends. So I have really good vibes about the groom!

  3. Yay, Vickie! What a lovely milestone. May the two of them have a magical day–and marriage!

I definitely feel older whenever I look at baby pics of the kids and then compare them to right now! (And they seem to miraculously grow taller overnight.)

  4. Someone wise told me as a young mother, “The days are long but the years are short.” I’ve found that to be true. It’s funny how insidious change is. It feels like nothing much is going on. And then you notice that your mom is having trouble getting around, or the nephew you used to babysit is getting married…it’s hard to wrap one’s mind around, isn’t it?

Congratulations to your niece–a wedding will be a fun family celebration. I love TN and used to live there. Though I do not enjoy the summer weather (whew!)–hope the wedding is in airconditioning!

    1. JP, That is the perfect wise saying. I’m going to pass it to my daughter, who has 2 very-littles. I used to live in TN also. I remember the summers very well.

  5. As you know, I have a huge family and have many, many weddings, graduations, and such under my belt. In fact, it’s almost time for some of my great-nieces and nephews to start the cycle anew. But the first time I felt that swoon of “ohmygosh, how can THIS be happening” was when my son’s childhood friend brought his own son trick-or-treating at my house. And mind you, this was at least 10 years ago, so now I really AM old!!

Have oodles of fun at the wedding, Vickie! And congrats to the happy couple!

  6. Vickie,
    Congrats!
I am definitely To old for this, when all these famous people my age look half my age.
Marisa Tomei, Bobby Flay, Nicholas Cage, Keanu Reeves, etc, etc, etc.
It’s so unfair! I don’t make enough money to stop the aging process like them!

  7. Vickie, what a darling picture! Congratulations. What a wonderful life event.

I don’t have to think too hard about what makes me feel older. I was at the California Crime Writers Conference this weekend and I’m not exaggerating when I say that 90% of our conversations were about our digestive systems!

  8. Congrats on the milestone birthday and your niece’s upcoming nuptials!!

I have friends and coworkers who are younger (often much younger), which I don’t notice until we have a conversation about a favorite album, TV show or movie. Then they’ll say something like, “Oh wow, that was my favorite in middle school.” or “I wasn’t allowed to stay up that late to watch that.” Boom. Instant aging.

    1. Oh, Kathy! Years ago I had a younger co-worker. For some reason, George Harrison’s name was mentioned and (hand on heart) she said “Didn’t he used to be part of some really big band?” Looking at her in disbelief, I said deadpan, “The Beatles.”

  9. I am now going to be 75 this year. Ouch! I ask, “Where did my youth go every time that I look in the mirror.” I now have a great grandnephew who will be one years old in July. It is hard to think about. When I went to my last reunion, I wondered who all of these old people were. I don’t feel that old but then this person dies at 76 or 80 and I wonder is that all there is? I remember telling my father when he reached 65, but now you get coupons. What a mistake to say that was. He passed at 68 and I miss him every day and more than I can say. Mother lived to 80 1/2 years old. But it is still not long enough. I just take one day at a time and try to stay healthy despite what happens to me. God bless us all!

    1. Madeline, you are totally going to rock 75! My mom will be 85 this year and I only hope I look as good as her one day!!

      1. Thanks Vicki. I hope so though I have developed some medical issues. But that goes with getting this age. Every day I get up is a good day.
