Welcome to “Chicks Celebration,” our fun new Chicks on the Case feature! Join us as we Chicks share what we’re currently celebrating (book release, new idea, recent read)…
1. Which Chick is celebrating? Jen
2. The reason for the celebration? the launch of Ill-Fated Fortune (Feb 20th)
3. What did you do? As always, I had a fabulous blog tour with Great Escapes Book Tours, organized by Lori at Escape with Dollycas. I also got to visit Career Authors, Dru’s Book Musings, George Cramer’s blog, and Jungle Red Writers. Plus, I got to be on YouTube for 10 Questions for Crime Writers of Color (pre-recorded) and on A Bookish Moment (livestreamed).
I’m gearing up for a fun event with Naomi Hirahara this Sunday, Feb 25th at 4pm at Village Well Books & Coffee in Culver City.

And I got myself a little fortune cookie memento for the launch!

4. How did things go? I never write on book birthdays because I spend so much time boosting and updating my author profiles (who knew there were so many out there?) on various sites. It was super rainy in L.A., too, and I’m a heliophile. 🌞But I was blown away by all the well wishes and kindnesses I received from social media and beyond.
Examples:
🥠People made graphics for my book launch, including CJ Connor and literary_escapism.
🥠Delia Pitts made an amazing bookstagram with my novel in it.
🥠Ellie Alexander mentioned me (Angela Sanders, Ellie, and I share a book birthday)!
5. Any neat stories to share?
I got my first ever five out of five bunnies 🐇rating from rants_n_reads!
Also, I received praise on the Great Escapes Book Tours, including:
Chow has given this series a firm foundation with Ill-Fated Fortune. I want to see what she has planned for these characters in the future and where the magic will take them.
~Escape with Dollycas
With a great cast of diverse characters and a sprinkling of magick ILL-FATED FORTUNE is a great new twist on a culinary mystery.
~Cozy Up With Kathy
Ill-Fated Fortune by Jennifer J. Chow is a delightful blend of magical realism and cozy mystery with engaging (and diverse) characters and a layered plot.
~Reading is my Superpower
Plus, I sent thank-you gifts to my book team, and my publicist highlighted the fortune cookie-themed treats on Instagram!
Readers: What else do you want to know? Ask me anything in the comments below!

Jennifer, I have the ebook and am looking forward to reading it soon. I promise to leave a review on Goodreads.

Hestia here,
This is so exciting. It amazes me how authors can come up with so many ideas, and sometimes working two or three series at the same time.
My question? How do you keep the different story lines separate?
And if have an idea you don’t want revealed in this book, but in a future one, do you try to hint at it in the current one?
Thank you for help me escape from the real world sometimes.

Thanks for the question, Hestia. I like jotting my ideas down in journals and having a working summary to keep things separate–sometimes I’ll even go reread portions of previous books to maintain the flow.
I do try to hint things in current books, especially when I know I’ve got several in the series coming!
And thank you for reading our books!

Congratulations on the new release, Jen. Are you still writing your Night Market series as well?

Great question, Liz. I have ideas for new Night Market books, but so far the publisher hasn’t decided to extend the series. 😦

Jen, congrats! I can’t wait to read the book. Question: what’s your favorite and least favorite promotional thing to do?

Yay, El! I love interacting with readers (especially when they enjoy the book–ha). I dislike updating everything because I always think I’m going to forget to change my info. In fact, when I checked my SinC profile, my “recent release” was Death By Bubble Tea.

Thank you so much, Leslie! Not gonna lie: When I did A Bookish Moment the day after launch, I thought, “Wait a minute. Will I even be coherent on a livestream?”

What a fantastic launch! So much to celebrate!!
Here’s my question: Has the evolving digital landscape (i.e. new platforms, Reels on Meta, etc.) changed how you and/or where you get the word out?

Yes! So true, Kathy! It’s been fascinating experiencing the changes. I’ve moved off Twitter and embraced Instagram–a lot of people tag me on there. And I’m learning to do more Reels to get engagement. Plus, this time around, there’s been a lot more YouTubing, whether recorded or livestreamed.

What inspired you to write your very first book? I have had fun jumping from blog to Facebook and where the Great Escapes Tour has taken me on this book launch. Now I just have to read your books lol.

Well, that depends on which book you mean… I have several shelved manuscripts, and then my first book was inspired by a historical event that happened in Taiwan. With my indie Winston Wong series, I lived & worked in the Silicon Valley, so I wanted to capture that atmosphere and create a kinda slapstick-prone sleuth.

Got my pre-order today and can’t wait to read it. I love your Asian culture and books. You are the BOMB!

By the by, we have an elderly Asian couple in our neighborhood that we are friends with. We go out to eat with them on a regular basis in Atlanta’s Chinatown and it is so cool, to have him order our meal in in either Szechuan or Mandarin or Cantonese. Fantastic. We have a great time. They are so much fun and so interesting, and their careers are amazing. Life is good.
