Yeah, yeah, we know…We are all Serious Readers and Writers and we would NEVER waste a second of precious keyboard time (let alone hours of binge-watching) in front of the boob tube. Of course, the Chicks make a few exceptions for shows that are truly worthy. Here’s our list of what we’re watching now!!
Lisa Q. Mathews
I’m a Designated Survivor fan, because I still miss 24 and Keifer Sutherland makes a great president. It’s a pretty cool premise: What would happen if our entire government disappeared when the Capitol Building got blown up during the State of the Union address and we had to rebuild it from scratch, starting with just one, apolitical person? I am also eagerly awaiting the final season of Longmire (don’t miss it, mystery fans–I promise you’ll love it!). I had to put my regular binge-watching aside for a while to write and cheer on the Red Sox and the Pats this fall and I got really behind. I may never find out what happened at the end of House of Cards. (On the other hand, maybe no one will now.) And I’m always up for comedies: Modern Family, Blackish, and Santa Clarita Diet are my faves. I’m also a late night TV regular–most often The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Oh, and very soon I’ll be checking out all those new Hallmark Christmas movies. My dream series? The Rockford Files Redux–miss you, Jimbo!
Ellen Byron
As someone who’s made her living writing for television, you’d think I’d actually watch it. I used to – a lot. But lately, not so much. For one thing, I’m constantly using that time to write. For another, I feel guilty parking my butt in front of the TV while my HS senior is slaving away at her homework. And for a third, without Mad Men and Downton Abbey – which are gone forever – and Veep and Silicon Valley – which are on hiatus – there’s not much to watch.
I do have one literal Must-See TV show: Will & Grace. The new iteration doesn’t miss a beat, and I LOVE it. Jer and I also watch pretty much every episode of SNL, although mostly to bond in our agreement that except for Keenan Thompson, all the current male cast members stink, and almost all the sketches suck because the current writers don’t know how to end them. I’m also a giant fan of Once Upon a Time, although I’m way behind – like, the whole new season behind – of the rebooted version. Can you say binge-watch?
Vickie Fee
I do enjoy “Father Brown Mysteries” and “Endeavor” (young Inspector Morse mysteries). But if I’m honest about what I’ve really been watching lately, it’s game shows from the 60s and 70s on Roku. My guilty pleasures include “Password” (I especially like the early ones). But my all-time favorite game show is “Match Game.” I have a serious fill-in-the-blank problem! Since these were short half-hour shows (and they run minus commercials), I tell myself I can watch just one episode, then get back to writing and other important duties. Four episodes later I’m still trying to come up with a funnier answer than Fannie Flagg and Charles Nelson Reilly.
Kellye Garrett
I have the most random taste in television shows. If a show has the word “tiny” in it or the word “Atlanta” in it, I probably watch it. Some of my faves include Tiny House Hunting, Tiny House Hunters and Tiny House, Big Living. I also can’t forget: Little Women: Atlanta, Real Housewives of Atlanta, Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta and Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta.
So basically, my dream TV show would be about a wedding dress designer who lives in a tiny house and likes to throw drinks in her frenemies’ faces.
Marla Cooper
I am totally in for Kellye’s dream TV show and would gladly binge-watch that! My current fave at this very moment is Project Runway, and we find out next week who will will. Because — as you know — in fashion, one day you’re in, and one day you’re out. And I am TOTALLY IN! (Okay, I know that’s not what she means by that, but I couldn’t resist.) In the meantime, oh my God, y’all! Writing this post made me want to Google “true crime show with prosecutor Kelly” because I couldn’t remember the name Cold Justice. This was an awesome show in which Kelly Siegler and Yolanda McClary solved cold cases, and it had last aired in 2015. I thought it was gone forever. But guess what? There’s a new season for 2017! Okay, I’m off to find it…
Cynthia Kuhn
There aren’t enough hours in the day to watch everything I’d like to watch. I do religiously watch Will and Grace. I want to watch the second season of Stranger Things—probably after fall semester ends.
But I did drop everything to watch a miniseries that just came onto Netflix: Alias Grace, which is a fabulous adaptation of my favorite book by Margaret Atwood. Also waiting for the return of Sherlock and Orphan Black—yes, I know the latter series ended, but I’m in denial and a girl can dream.

Kellye’s show sounds hilariously great. And I haven’t heard the names Fannie Flagg or Charles Nelson Reilly since I was a kid home sick in bed in the 70s.

LOVE Kellye’s tiny house wedding dress designer diva of Atlanta idea! Ellen, you could write the pilot for it!

You are all very versatile. I am all about Hallmark as well. ❤️ 🎄, although I will be missing the mystery movies until January.
However, don’t EVER take away my Food Network channel from me. I will kill anyone who does that. I know how. With food! 😂

So many great shows here! I’m also a big fan of Designated Survivor and love to watch Say Yes to the Dress with my daughter. (I think I secretly want a do-over of my ’90s wedding dress, complete with mutton-leg arms!)
My very favorite show right now is Great News. The lead writer is the awesomely amazing Tracey Wigfield and it’s produced by my girl-crush, Tina Fey. I think it’s laugh out loud funny, and the smart, wry writing feels like a mashup of 30 Rock and Arrested Development. (But that could just be me.) I highly recommend!!

Oh my gosh! I absolutely love it. The pilot isn’t my favorite episode, so if you think it might be up your alley, my advice is just keep watching! 🙂 I hope you like it!

Love Tina Fey! And Kathy, we want to see pics of the wedding dress!

Ha ha! I would, but I can’t figure out how to post a pic here. I’m not sure any of the photographs do justice to the mutton-ness (mutton-y? mutton-y on the bounty?) of the arms. It was very much a dress of its time. 🙂

I started watching Designated Survivor for the same reasons as Lisa. I’m less of a fan this season. They’ve cut back the intrigue and gone for a more political show, which isn’t what I signed up for. I’m debating whether to continue or not.
As Ellen knows, I’m a huge Once Upon a Time fan as well. It’s taken me a few episodes to fully get on board with this season, but I’m definitely enjoying it. It’s not up to par with the earlier seasons, but it is fun. And I won’t say any more until Ellen gets caught up. (Please binge watch this weekend!)
I watch way too much TV these days, but my current obsession is The Good Place. Hilarious! I’m so bummed it is on hiatus until January. I need to know what happens next now!

Mark, I so agree that last season (the first ) was much stronger. I prefer action–luckily it picked up these past 2 episodes.

Mark, I’m late to reply for absolutely no good reason except I was all over SoCal this weekend for my book. I’m so behind that it’s not fair for fellow OUAT fans to suffer for that. Share what you need. I will eventually catch up.

I just binged through Stranger Things. I’m waiting with bated breath for Peaky Blinders Season 4. Cillian Murphy is the head of a gypsy crime gang in post-WWI England. I had no idea until I saw this show that there is a relationship between Rom and Irish gypsies. It’s on Netflix. I started watching Ray Donovan but I have to take that in small doses unless I want Liev Shreiber in my dreams. Not always a bad thing, but it’s depressing to wake up and find him not there.

I’ve heard good stuff and been meaning to check out Peaky Blinders, Keenan!

All of these shows sound great, and now I want to watch them all! I have been watching Designated Survivor, and I agree with Mark that it has morphed into something different, and not for the better, but I’ll have in there for Kiefer Sutherland. Another favorite is Orphan Black. If you haven’t seen it, give it a chance, and you’ll get hooked. Tatiana Maslani is absolutely amazing playing a family of clones.
