In honor of the wonderful and beloved Catherine O’Hara.
From Delia Deetz to Moira Rose and everyone in between…what a sublime collection of unique, hilarious, and unforgettable characters she created!
What are your favorite performances or moments, if you feel like sharing?
Here are some of mine:
- Schitt’s Creek: Moira Rose filming the winery commercial, the way she takes her role in “The Crows Have Eyes 3: The Crowening” so seriously, her delivery of unforgettable phrases like “digruntled pelican” or “positively bedeviled with meeetings” and the way she pronounced certain words with a twist, like “bebe” and “fri-ta-ta.”
- Beetlejuice: when Delia is sleeping and hears a sound: she suddenly bolts upright, grabs the remote and clicks it at the tv, then falls back down–all without opening her eyes.
- For Your Consideration: Marilyn Hack’s Oscar-hopeful makeover!
- Her beautiful singing: “God Loves a Terrier” in Best in Show, “A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow” in A Mighty Wind, and “Sally’s Song” in A Nightmare Before Christmas.
If you’re feeling that this loss has hit you particularly hard too, the following links offer a chance to see a little more of the light that she shared with all of us. 💔

I’ll leave you with these wise words from Moira: “It’s hard to understand why things happen the way that they do. Our lives are like little bebe crows carried upon a curious wind and all we can wish is for that wind to place us on solid ground.”

Thank you for this tribute. I really enjoyed her energy.

Agree! She always infused a sort of quirky fabulousness into her roles, I thought.

We’ll all miss Catherine O’Hara forever–the queen of humor, in my book!

She was the queen! (Now thinking of the moment in Schitt’s Creek when she comes out in that bishop’s hat, which really looked like a crown. You know what I mean!)
It just felt right to honor her here, amongst this group of humorous authors.

My fave O’Hara character: Cookie Gugelman Fleck in Best in Show, singing “Everyone Loves a Terrier.” (“Cookie? Cookie Gugelman?”)

This one hit me pretty hard. I’ve been a huge fan of O’Hara since “Waiting for Guffman,” the first Christopher Guest documentary. But I’ll always think of her as half of the marvelous duo, Mitch and Micky (sure wish there were an album of theirs). Thanks for this beautiful tribute, Cynthia.

Waiting for Guffman is brilliant! I will never forget Christopher Guest practicing his Corky Sherwood dance, or Catherine O’Hara and Fred Willard doing their theater routines…they were a good comedy pairing too.

A lovely tribute! I appreciated her depiction of a harried mom in the Home Alone series (and can better relate now).

She’s so great in that role. No one yells as simultaneously meaningfully and hilariously as Catherine O’Hara!

She was an inspiration for me. I thought of her when I created improv characters. But my favorite would have to Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek. I now and forever more will always say bebe in the way she said baby.
What a loss.

Oh, I love that, her being an inspiration for your improv.
(And yes, tremendous loss.)
Bebe forever…

When I was a kid in Canada, I always loved watching her on SCTV. She was a standout in an exceptionally talented cast that included Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin and Dave Thomas, Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis. If she was in something, it was sure to be a quirky, fun ride.

What a wonderful memory! And oh gosh, look at all of those amazing comedy stars. I wonder if they had any idea, when they met, that they’d all become famous?

A terrifically funny woman from the start. I always admired how much she gave to every part she played, with full creativity. Fearless to the core!
