Chick Chat: Written in the stars?

Whether you think astrology is just for fun or you have a fully mapped-out chart with your houses and your rising sign, you probably have an opinion about your astrological sign and what it represents. As a baby editor, I was assigned to work on a book series by Sydney Omarr (late astrologist-to-the-stars). I can’t say that gave me a lot of faith in astrological signs or predictions. But according to the charts, I am a classic Cancer. I have deep feelings (read: overemotional), generally exhibit empathy, am a good friend and listener, love the water and moon and tides, and have a “rich inner life of dreams and fantasies.” (No comment.) It also means I can occasionally be moody or crabby, and I don’t care for confrontation. More truths: I may sometimes feel a pressing need to retreat to my safe shell or dig into the sand. Oh, and I move sideways. But I do write intuitive sleuths that notice odd details and pay close attention to the actions/reactions of others. Maybe ol’ Syd wasn’t entirely wrong.

I used to hate being a Capricorn. It seemed like the dray horse of zodiac signs: hardworking, plodding, and stolid. I read somewhere that our color is brown and our gemstone is garnet. Buh-buh-buh boring! But try as I might to deny it, I’m very much a Capricorn. Not only as my primary sign – if that’s what you call it – but all over the chart someone once made for me. And now I embrace the sign’s general attributes. Wikipedia writes that Capricorns have a “methodical and achievement-oriented nature.” To which I say, hell yeah! CoPilot credits us with “ambition, discipline, and determination.” Preach, Copilot! And guess what? I discovered that Tsavorite, a stunning green gemstone I love and wear frequently, is actually a variety of garnet – so when I wear it, I’m wearing my birthstone.

When you and Michelle Obama have the same birth sign, it can’t be all bad. In less positive news, I share my birthday with Jeff Bezos. But hey, you can’t say he’s not “achievement-oriented!”

I’m a Scorpio — but hear me out. I think we get a bad rap! On the plus side, we’re supposed to be passionate (approaching life, work, and relationships with an all-or-nothing dedication), resourceful, loyal, and intuitive. Guilty as charged!! There are some negative traits, too, but for some weird reason I put an asterisk on all of those. I’d like to think that my Libra influence balances out the downsides. Slow to forgive? Well, I’m no goldfish (hat tip toTed Lasso). But vindictive? I would never! Okay, sometimes my Scorpio bestie and I have fun plotting our revenge, but we laugh and move on, because we’re full-grown adult humans who are able to move on. The only revenge I exact is on paper. Like the saying goes, “Careful, or you might end up in one of my novels.”

I always say that I don’t believe in astrology–except for Virgos. Because I match the definition of a Virgo to a T.

I make lists. I’m obsessively organized. I’m rarely late to an appointment. And I tend to gravitate towards other people who share my sign (such my wife and my sister–the two people in the world I’m closest to).

I have this theory that it’s really a genetic thing more than one of the stars. Since Virgos are born in late August or in September, we were conceived around the new year. So perhaps our parents were the organized types to set aside time during the winter holidays to–as Frank Sinatra so poetically sang it–make a little whoopie. It’s a fun theory.

Funnily enough, I sometimes covered for the student who wrote horoscopes for our school paper. I really wished, though, that my sign was a cool animal or mythology character. Would’ve been happy to switch with El! Instead, my sign is an object: the scales. At a book event I was at, though, the moderator said she could figure out my astrological sign because I kept on talking about justice being served (yay, balance!). I also definitely have artistic leanings.

My sign is pretty accurate since I do take some time to make up my mind (read: indecisive). If you ask me to bring cheesecake to a party, I’ll often get three kinds! And we’re also known for valuing relationships, which is definitely true for me.

Some of the positive qualities of Scorpios: determined, passionate, and loyal as a puppy. Some of the less positive qualities: unforgiving, controlling, secretive. I rest my case. Ha! I love the fact that Scorpio is a water sign. People born under the water sign are supposed to be empathetic, intuitive, and imaginative. But this is where I wonder how much of my personality is nature and how much is nurture? My parents taught my siblings and I to be empathetic, loyal, and creative. I believe it’s a combination of the two.

Lisa already did a great job of covering the Cancer qualities. The emotional, imaginative, and water-enthusiastic qualities are accurate for me as well. One of the negatives I relate to is the grabbing power of the crab claws…it’s pretty hard to let something go once I clamp down on it. Have spent many nights worrying about things I can’t do anything about! Then again, holding on can be a positive thing: for example, when not giving up on a dream. *clicks claws*

  4. Oh, I am all the positive – and negative – aspects of Virgo. Analytical, detail-oriented, reliable, helpful (or at least I try to be). Check, check, check, and check. I am also a perfectionist, although I try not to be overly-critical – but I have no patience with people who don’t even try and bite my tongue frequently.

    And I love my birthstone – sapphire.

  5. As a Aquarius, air sign here. I definitely identify with some characteristics like being highly independent, (my sister, the Libra says read that as detached!) analytical, having a strong sense of social justice, but other traits not so much. I am not artistic nor good at doing things with my hands. Having lots of Cancer in my chart, family and relationships often drive my choices and much like Lisa I am very empathetic and avoid conflict like the plague!

      1. I’m on the cusp and I feel like I have a lot of Libra traits to balance out my Scorpio. My husband is also a Libra and you should see us trying to decide where to have dinner! 😂

  7. Raising my hand as a Gemini.

    When I looked up the characteristics of my sign, I found lots of interesting facts about the Gemini constellation. Like it has two bright stars near to each other, which can be shown as a set of twins, a pair of goats or a pair of peacocks. And that Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome, were considered to be Gemini twins. News to me! And if you are wondering, no, I don’t have a twin.

    As to Gemini characteristics, they are both good and bad.

    The good: curious and quick-witted.

    The bad: inconsistent, which is further defined as erratic, variable capricious and fluctuating. Whew! Looks like we Gemini’s need to get consistent about tackling those inconsistencies. 🙂

    2. Debbie, I just went straight down the rabbit hole looking at different star-sign characteristics. Apparently my hubby and I are the worst star-sign match, ha. There must be some wriggle room in these profiles.

  8. Love reading about everyone’s signs!!! And Cynthia, I cracked up at the pinchy crab claws. I hadn’t thought of those, ha. (I’m a little scared of them. And lobsters, even in the grocery store tank.)

    2. Lisa – I totally understand getting sucked into going down the rabbit hole. It’s a regular habit of mine. And now that I know a Gemini is curious, I can blame my sign. As to signs not compatible, that’s a rabbit hole I plan to dive into next 🙂
