Happy Book Birthday to Lisa Q Mathews!

We’re thrilled to announce that Cardiac Arrest is officially available! The Chicks have been eagerly anticipating this date for months now, and we wanted to be among the first to welcome Lisa’s book into the world. But first, a little bit about the book:

Cardiac.Arrest.MathewsTwentysomething party girl Summer Smythe is starting over in the unlikeliest of places: Hibiscus Pointe, a kitschy retirement community in upscale Milano, Florida. Her new gig? Working for Dr. A, Milano’s much-loved cardiologist. But being in over her head is the least of Summer’s worries when her new boss drops dead…right in front of her.

Longtime resident Dorothy Westin prefers to mind her own business. But when the young blonde already causing ripples throughout Hibiscus Pointe becomes a person of interest in Dr. A’s murder, Dorothy springs into action. Not only because the real killer is still on the loose, but because there’s simply no way her clueless-but-kind new friend could have poisoned someone.

Dorothy and Summer soon discover that despite his chosen specialty, Dr. A had quite a reputation for breaking hearts. And if the Ladies Smythe and Westin don’t identify the guilty party fast, Summer will end up in handcuffs…and Dorothy in a body bag.

So without further ado, here are a few words from Lisa’s fellow Chicks–and the brand new author!

 Ellen Byron

Congratulations, my friend! Welcome to the mad, mad, mad world of being published. Over the next few months, you will write what will feel like an endless stream of blogs and tweets in the name of getting the word out. You will fight the urge to check Amazon sales figures and reviews on a daily basis. You will feel like you owe every friend who buys your book more than a thank-you and a pen. And you will feel a twinge of competition with every writer who debuts in your year (or maybe that one’s just me).

And you know what? Even when you’re beating your brain trying to think of yet another guest blog post, or dreading the Q&A that must be done, you will feel a bubbling of joy. Because it happened. You wrote words that other people want to read. Told a story that will lure readers to it and please them. My advice? Love. Every. Minute. Of. It. You get one shot at the heady sensation of being a debut author. Be excited by every review and blog post comment and reader who contacts you through your website. You and I have virtually held each other’s hands through this journey, Lisa, and I am so proud of you. Make sure you take time to be proud of yourself.

Lisa!!!!!!! I’ve been waiting anxiously for this day, so I can only imagine how you must be feeling—considering you did all the hard work while I was just lucky enough to read the manuscript after you were done. I’m so excited that Summer and Dorothy are finally being introduced to the world. I know that said world will love them just as much as everyone who has already read the book does. My wish for you on your book birthday is to fully enjoy this moment. Have a day doing whatever you want. Sleep in late. Dance around your house in just your pajamas. Eat ALL the candy. Tell everyone you run into that your book is currently available. Just have fun. You’ve earned it.

From a completely selfish standpoint, I want to thank you. You haven’t just been my critique partner. You’ve been a friend. You’ve been a big sister. You’ve been a mentor. And you’ve been a psychologist probably more times than you’ve wanted to. Speaking for all of the unpublished mystery writers out there with novels that don’t fit the traditional definition of today’s “cozy” genre, you truly are an inspiration!

Lisa and I started out as penpals—having met in the online Guppy chapter of Sisters in Crime—and when we met face to face at Left Coast Crime, we became instant friends. I’d read the first couple chapters of Cardiac Arrest, and I couldn’t wait to read more. That weekend, she was waiting back to hear from Carina Press, and I knew way down deep in my bones that the answer was going to be yes—if for no other reason than I was mentally willing it to happen and I was pretty sure the universe would not ignore my demands.

I don’t know how long after Left Coast it was before Lisa called with the good news that Carina had picked up her book, but I was so thrilled to know that Cardiac Arrest was going to be put out into the world. It’s amazing how time flies, because now here we are, celebrating the release of this terrific book. So to Lisa, I say congratulations, my friend! And to everyone else I say, if you haven’t already done so, go buy your copy right now!

By the way, the awesome Cleo Coyle had this to say about it:

Cardiac Arrest is sweet, sassy, and smart. Senior sleuth Dorothy Westin and impetuous young Summer Smythe make an endearing team in this sparkling debut. Lisa Q. Mathews is a terrific new voice in cozy mysteries.”

Well, this is it. By the time you read this, Cardiac Arrest will have officially pubbed at the stroke of midnight. Some of you may remember my earlier blog about sleepless nights monitoring the countdown clock, Notes from the Panic Room. I promised to tell you what it was like on the other side. I don’t know for sure yet, because as I’m writing this, it’s almost midnight the night before, but right now I can tell you it feels like New Year’s Eve.

I’ve been taking stock of the past year’s journey, reflecting on the highs and lows (mostly highs!), and making resolutions for crazy daily word counts. (My manuscript for Book 2, Permanently Booked, is due in 3 days, so I won’t have time to fall off the wagon anytime soon.) But what I’m thinking of most tonight are the people who helped me Believe.

My family, editor, and agent, of course. Cardiac Arrest’s first readers, back when it was titled Sweet Way to Go. And especially my fellow Chicks. Ellen, my first mystery writer BFF, with whom I’ve shared all kinds of authorly ups and downs  (and who introduced me to some very interesting LA restaurants); Mariella, who always makes me laugh and just yesterday surprised me with a beautiful Facebook banner she created for my launch; and Kellye, my Crime Bake and texting buddy who was always willing to read a rush draft of a manuscript, blog, or piece of copy (and I was there when she met her agent, woohoo!). Thank you all for the love, advice and support—and right backatcha! One of the best things about this year was starting Chicks on the Case together.

So now, as the Muppets would say, it’s time to get things started… Hope you enjoy Cardiac Arrest as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Join us in celebrating Lisa’s debut novel! This is kind of like an online launch party, so feel free to enjoy some virtual champagne and leave your book-birthday greetings in the comments below.

    1. Awww, thanks Cynthia! We’re pretty fond of you, too! 🙂 Lisa is off to Crime Bake so I’m not sure if she’s seen this, but just wanted to say thanks on her behalf—and for being so supportive yourself!
