So many books, so little time! This week, the Chicks are sharing what books they’re currently devouring, mysteries or otherwise. And since all of our readers are just that—readers—we hope you’ll share what you’re reading (or are about to be reading) in the comments below!
Marla Cooper
I spent the summer reading the same book over and over again: My own! To be fair, I was deep in revisions on the second book in my series, so I had a good excuse. But the second I sent in my manuscript, I picked up Death Crashes the Party by Vickie Fee, which I’m reading now. (Don’t tell me how it ends!) When I’m done with that, I have a whole slew of books that I picked up in the book room at Bouchercon, all vying for my attention—and since I met so many of the authors, it’s going to be really hard to pick! But before that, I should probably get to all those books I downloaded to my Kindle over the summer…
At the moment I must report I’m reading a worn, mildewed copy of Championship Selling: Real Estate Edition by Marilyn Jennings (1991). I got it for free from our local swap shop and I figured it wouldn’t hurt to pick up a few extra tips. (Move over, Phil Dunphy!) As soon as I finish that one, I’m planning to dig in to Mortal Fall from the crazy-talented and ever-lovely Christine Carbo. Her debut novel The Wild Inside was amazing, so I know this one will be also. I would have read Mortal Fall first over Championship Selling, but my husband grabbed it right out of the shipping package and reminded me I had a manuscript to finish. Ohhhh. Right.

I’m super far behind when it comes to my reading list. I’m very slowly making my way through Janet Evanovich and Phoef Sutton’s new Curious Minds book. After that, I plan to read Murder in G Major by Alexia Gordon. It’s a paranormal cozy about a black American classical musician who ends up solving a murder in Ireland. You know how much I love to see other mysteries by black authors so I can’t wait to finally have a moment to sit down and enjoy it!
Ellen Byron
I’m reading three books simultaneously. The first two, The Haunting of Louisiana and New Orleans Ghosts, Voodoo and Vampires: Journey Into Darkness… are sort of prep work for the Halloween Book Tour I’m doing with “Devilish” Diane Vallere and “Ghoulish” Gigi Pandian. The third book, Murder on a Silver Platter, by my friend Shawn Reilly Simmons, is a delight and a super-welcome distraction from the creepiness of books one and two. Yes, believe it or not, a book about MURDER is my light reading right now.

Like Marla, I was on lockdown this summer finishing Book Three, One Fete in the Grave. Just sent revisions back to editor today! I recently read Terror in Taffeta — loved it! I need to catch up with Ellen’s new book. I read Plantation Shudders, along with the other nominees for Best First Novel before Malice this year. It goes without saying it was great, since it was nominated for an Agatha Award, but I’ll say it anyway — it was great!
I’m currently reading No Farm No Foul by the fab Peg Cochran. She and I are doing a joint book signing in Grand Rapids in a couple of weeks. Lisa, I’m woefully behind on your series. Thanks for reminding me that Cardiac Arrest is languishing on my Kindle. I’m moving it to the top of my TBR pile! I’ll probably skip Championship Selling: Real Estate Edition. Maybe you can fill me in on the highlights 🙂
And Kellye, I’m still anxiously awaiting your cover reveal for Hollywood Homicide. I actually checked again last night while I was on Amazon to see if it had been uploaded!

Thanks, Vickie!! Can’t wait to read your books as well. I’m turning over a new leaf (well, many, actually) this fall, with my TBR pile. And no worries, I’d be happy to send you Championship Selling just the second I’m done.
